Groesbeck Cemetery also known as Ashland Cemetery is located in the NW 1/4 of Section 19 in New Hope Township of Union County.  From Highway 169 in Lorimor, travel west on the REA Road 3 miles (hard surface changes to gravel at this point) continue on west another 1/2 mile to Grand River Drive.  Turn south 1 1/2 miles.  Cemetery is on the west side of the road back in a pasture in a grove of trees.  An overhead sign at gate on the road says “Groesbeck Cemetery.”  

 

William and Susan Groesbeck, as newlyweds in 1855, built a cabin on a hilltop in Section 19, on what today is the site of the cemetery.  The cemetery was originally down the hill north of the present site, with the earliest burial recorded on a tombstone as 1857.  The cemetery was later moved to the farmyard.  The outline of the cabin foundation can still be seen in the cemetery.
